How to put Gold Leaf on walls?
1. Preparation:
The first step is to make sure that the wall is smooth and is free of any dents or marks which otherwise would show up when the leaf will be applied. Use sandpaper to smoothen out the rough areas. Prime and paint the wall beforehand. Generally the polish is made of spirit and lakdana and then kajal is mixed to it to blacken the surface.
Before applying the size (adhesive stick), line or square up your area so that the leaf is applied in a regular pattern.
2. Applying the adhesive:
The adhesive used to stick the gold leaf to the walls is known as Size. It is generally recommended to use a water-based size as it allows for easy application and provides extended ‘tack’ time, allowing you to apply your leaf without any hurry.
You can apply the size either with a roller or a soft brush. The size should be allowed to dry and reach ‘tack’ before the leaf is used. ‘Tack’ is a time when the adhesive is neither too wet nor too dry. To test it, rub your knuckle on the adhesive, if it feels like the back of a sellotape, it means it has reached tack. The wall is now ready for the application of gold leaf.
3. Using Gold Leaf on wall:
After the surface has tacked, you can now apply the gold leaf. Be careful while folding back the protective paper. Make sure you hold the leaf firmly so that it doesn’t tear.
4. Removing the excess and Burnishing:
Remove the loose flakes with a soft brush. Then approximately after a couple of hours, use a soft glider mop to brush the surface to remove excess leaf and help increase the shine of the leaf. Make sure not to use the mop too hard on the surface.
5. Sealing it:
It can also be called Protection Coating. It can either be Lacquer, PU or Acrylic coating. It is generally applied through spraying. The coating helps in protecting the gold leaf from dust, moisture or any climate impact. It also helps in easy cleaning of the surface.
